On behalf of everyone in NIU Athletics, Happy Holidays!

Let us start by thanking you for your investment in the success of NIU’s student-athletes through your annual contribution to the Huskie Athletic Fund. Your generosity makes an impact on our nearly 400 student-athletes on a daily basis and we could not be more appreciative.

As you are likely aware, Congress is currently considering changes to the tax code that could be signed into law in the coming weeks. While the modifications are many, the proposed changes may have a direct impact on your philanthropic gifts. Internal Revenue Service Code section 170(I) currently allows for 80% of a donation paid for premium or priority seating at an athletic event in an athletic stadium of an institution of higher learning to be considered a charitable contribution. The proposed tax legislation eliminates this provision. If passed, future donations to the Huskie Athletic Fund that are connected to season tickets will no longer be considered tax-deductible as of January 1, 2018.

At this time, NIU does not have any plans to adjust the donation structure to the premium seating program for Football and Men’s & Women’s Basketball season tickets. We are actively monitoring the progress of the new legislation and are considering how to move forward should it pass into law.

If, after consulting with your tax professional, you wish to make a donation now to pay ahead on your annual contribution for future seasons, this option is available and should be paid by December 31, 2017. Our Athletics Development staff would be happy to assist you with any questions you may have related to your support of NIU Athletics.

You may contact the Huskie Athletic Fund at (815) 753-1923 (M-F, 8:30am-5pm) or at Please note the HAF offices are closed from Dec. 22 – Jan. 1. The NIU Foundation will have staff available on Dec. 28-29 to process credit card gifts over the phone. To reach the NIU Foundation please call (815) 753-1626. Mailed checks should be postmarked by December 30, 2017, and online credit card gifts should be made by December 31, 2017 to ensure timely processing for the 2017 tax year. You can make online gifts at

Thank you again for your generous support of NIU Athletics and our student-athletes. We will continue to monitor the new legislation and pass along information as it becomes available.

Go Huskies!
